With a library of over 65 designs, our impression mats are engineered to give your soap a professional, high-end finish — batch after batch. Whether you're brand new to adding textures or just looking to level up your technique, this guide walks you through everything you need to know for a perfect clean release every time.

The Standard Method: Bottom of the Mold

For the most reliable, edge-to-edge detail, placing your mat at the bottom of your mold is the go-to technique.

The Set-Up

Place the mat design-side UP in the bottom of your soap mold. Make sure it lies completely flat — any curl or lift will show up in your final bars.

The Release Agent

Before pouring, you may choose to lightly mist the mat with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. It acts as a release agent and helps soap batter flow into every fine detail without trapping air.

The Pour

Pour your soap batter low and slow directly over the mat, using a spatula as a guide to prevent air bubbles. Pouring slowly lets the weight of the soap naturally displace any trapped air in the design.

⚠️ Recipe Note: Impression mats work best with fast-setting soap recipes. Olive oil-heavy or slow-setting vegan recipes do not set up firmly enough for a clean release and are not recommended.

The Pro Trick: Using Mats on Top

Can you use these mats on the top of a poured loaf? Yes — but you can't just press a dry mat into a full loaf. If you push the mat straight into set batter, it can't reach the crevices and will likely squeeze out the sides instead. The trick is the Pre-Fill Method.

Step 1: Coat the Mat

After spritzing the mat with alcohol, take a small amount of thin emulsified soap batter and manually spread it into the mat's design. Make sure every line and detail is fully filled.

Step 2: The Marriage

Place the pre-filled mat design-side DOWN onto your freshly poured wet loaf.

Step 3: The Bond

Gently press the mat so it "sticks" to the main batch. This ensures the design is fully integrated — no peeling or layering off later.

✦ Pro Tip

We pre-fill on almost every batch — the color change gives you a stunning contrast between the mat detail and the loaf beneath it, and it works beautifully whether you're using the mat on top or bottom.

The Unmolding — The Reveal

Patience is the key to a flawless impression. Rush this step and you risk blurring all that beautiful detail you just created.

Wait for the Set

Whether the mat was on the top or bottom, wait until the soap is completely hard before unmolding. If the soap is too soft, it will grab the mat and blur the texture.

The Straight Pull

When you're ready, peel the mat slowly and steadily. Some soapers prefer starting from a corner, others go edge to edge — find what works for you. Just take your time and let the mat release naturally.

Impression Mat Care & Cleaning

A well-cared-for mat will give you hundreds of beautiful batches. Here's how to keep yours in like-new condition:

  • Use lukewarm water and mild dish soap to clean after each use.
  • For intricate designs, use a soft-bristled brush (a toothbrush or nail brush works perfectly) to gently clear any soap residue from the fine detail.
  • Never put your mats in the dishwasher or use boiling water — high heat will permanently warp the geometry.
  • Always store your mats flat to prevent curling.

Why Our Designs Stand Out

Every one of our 65+ designs is perfected in-house and checked against our Stampify Process. We ensure every line meets our "Sharpie Rule" — thick enough to be durable, fine enough to look elegant. We also stabilize "islands" so even the most complex patterns stay intact, batch after batch.
